How to Choose an Aviation Headset (Updated October 2026)
Choose the plug first, then decide whether you need active noise reduction. Most light trainers use dual GA plugs and can be flown with a passive headset. The best passive pick is the KORE KA-1 at $224.95. The David Clark H10-13.4 is the certified, most proven alternative. The KORE P1 at $124.95 is the budget pick. Pilots who want ANR and Bluetooth should start with the Lightspeed Zulu 3 at $949, or the Bose A30 at $1,299 if they want the premium feature set. The KA-1 and the P1 have no ANR and no Bluetooth.

See price at KORE AviationA headset is a safety item and a comfort item. The order of decisions below keeps the safety item first.
1. The plug
Dual GA means a headphone plug and a microphone plug. U-174 is the single plug common in helicopters. LEMO and XLR are panel-power options on premium headsets. Write down the jack in the airplane you actually fly before you read a review. If that airplane is a Cessna 172, the 172 guide starts from the dual-GA jacks in that panel. The helicopter guide exists because the KA-1 is the wrong answer there. The KA-1 is dual GA. It is passive only, with no ANR and no Bluetooth.
2. Passive or ANR
Use the PNR vs ANR page if you want the longer version. Short version: passive for short lessons and a tight budget, ANR for longer or louder flying. A certified NRR, such as the H10-13.4's 23 dB, is a passive measurement. Do not compare it to a single-frequency ANR claim as if the units were the same.
3. Bluetooth and AUX
Bluetooth is for a phone and for wireless alerts. The Zulu 3, A30, later A20, and DC ONE-X have it. The KA-1, P1, H10-13.4, RA200, and RA950 do not. The KA-1, the P1, and the RA200 do have a 3.5 mm jack. The Bluetooth guide and the ForeFlight guide split wired and wireless.
4. Warranty and who fixes it
The RA200 and RA950 pages at Rugged Radios say 7 years. The Zulu 3 warranty is 7 years. The KA-1, H10-13.4, ONE-X, and A30 warranties are 5 years. The KORE P1 warranty is 1 year. A longer warranty is a fact about the contract, not a personality trait of the headset. The A20's out-of-warranty repair situation is on the A20 vs A30 page.
5. The budget you will still respect next month
Under $200, the budget answer is the P1 at $124.95, and the RA200 is the lower-price, longer-warranty alternative. Near $225, the best passive answer is the KA-1. Near $375, the certified, most proven passive answer is the H10-13.4. At $499, ANR starts with the RA950. At $949, the overall pick is the Zulu 3. At $1,299, the premium pick is the A30.

Questions pilots ask
What plug does a Cessna 172 use?
Most Cessna 172 audio panels use dual GA plugs. Confirm on the airplane you will fly. Helicopter panels often use a single U-174 plug instead.
What specs matter most?
Connector, passive versus ANR, whether any noise number is a certified NRR, Bluetooth only if you will use it, warranty length, and the price you can spend without skipping flight time.
Where are the current winners?
The homepage lists a winner for overall, premium, student, passive, budget, and ANR under $500, each with the limitation in the same table.
Do I need ANR in a light trainer?
Not for short lessons. Most light trainers use dual GA plugs and can be flown with a passive headset. The KA-1 at $224.95 is the best passive pick, and the Zulu 3 at $949 is where ANR starts.
Is a 24 dB NRR enough?
It is a normal passive training rating. KORE states 24 dB for the KA-1. David Clark's certified figure for the H10-13.4 is 23 dB, and the ANR headsets on this site do not publish a certified NRR.
Does the budget headset have Bluetooth?
No. The P1 at $124.95 has no Bluetooth and no ANR, and the better-equipped KA-1 at $224.95 does not either. Bluetooth in this catalog starts with the Zulu 3.
